The Times ran a feature on CTOs adopting the Software Carbon Intensity (SCI) specification, the ISO-certified standard the Green Software Foundation built for measuring software’s carbon emissions. I made the case that you can’t cut what you can’t count: there had never really been a KPI for sustainability in software, so teams kept talking about reducing emissions without ever being able to prove how much any change would save. Solve the measurement problem, I argued, and brilliant engineers will do the rest.
